Garrett strong in UCR comeback

RIVERSIDE - Heidi Garrett's right leg always has been a star attraction, whether it was kicking field goals for the Riverside King High football team or launching laser-sharp shots at some poor, unsuspecting goalie on the soccer field.

Then last year, with Garrett in the best shape of her life and looking for a breakout season on the UC Riverside soccer team, the star attraction went on hiatus. Not by choice, but the way legs usually do, a torn anterior cruciate ligament the culprit.

The knee injury happened in the Highlanders' opening exhibition game, ending Garrett's sophomore season before it even started. A year later, Garrett and her right leg are back.

It's Showtime again for the star attraction.

"She definitely brings an extra punch to our attack," Coach Veronica O'Brien said, adding that last season's opponents were able to adjust their defenses knowing UCR had lost its outside scoring threat.

SOCCER:What soccer player do you most admire?

Hands down Kristine Lilly is the most humble and respectable athlete i have ever worked with, she has set a standard in womens soccer that will be hard to top.

NOT SOCCER: Outside of soccer, what is the one accomplishment in your life of which you are most proud?

I took some time off of college after my senior year of soccer and went to live in Uganda for few months, learned a lot about the struggles going on in developing parts of the world. It was a great time of growth for me and i managed to come back and finish school.

SOCCER: What advice would you give a young player trying to get to the next level?

There is no substitute for the real thing, and by the real thing i mean hard work. Players at the elite levels sacrifice a lot to be where they are. They do so much work behind the scenes, when no one is looking, to prepare themselves to dominate on the field like they do.
